American citizens own a lot of guns. That doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone, but the thing that may surprise you is just how those numbers compare with those of other countries.

The folks over at the Movoto Real Estate Blog did some really interesting research to create this gun infographic, drawing their statistics from fairly recent survey and census data (2007-2010). It really is eye-opening to see just how much firepower the different states each have when compared to entire countries. Here are the exact numbers of guns owned in each state.
The top three states in gun ownership are California, Texas, and New York and those three states compare to some pretty big countries in firepower. California has almost as many guns as all of China; Texas is comparable with Germany; New York nearly matches Pakistan’s firepower.
These numbers go to show just how important an issue gun ownership truly is in our country. With these sheer numbers, guns and their owners are here to stay. The debate about gun safety laws will continue to rage for a long time.
