I think we can all agree… velvet is the next best thing to bone.
In the summertime before deer season, I am captivated by velvet bucks. I roam the crop fields in July and August, hoping to capture with the camera those whitetail bucks sporting their glorious velvet. It’s a game of first and last light, but if you can find them, bachelor groups abound. And that is pretty cool to see.
Here’s a glimpse into the many bucks I’ve crossed paths with over the years. Most sport the headgear that is sure to quicken the pulse once the season begins. Others will get a pass until the next year.
These bucks were all photographed in Eastern Ontario, Canada.

If you had your choice, which buck would you be gunning for come season opener? Number eight is a definite favorite for me.
Gotta love those sweet velvet bucks… but please hurry up, hunting season!
