If You’ve Never Been to the Black Hills of South Dakota, Here’s Some Persuasion

Once you visit the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, you won’t want to leave.

Nestled among the sprawling northern Plains lies a pine-clad mountain range. It’s known as the Black Hills region of South Dakota. There, you will find an abundance of things to see and do. Thousands upon thousands of people from all over the world, descend upon the Black Hills every year.

Are you into hiking? Try climbing Black Elk Peak. At 7,000+ feet in elevation, it’s the highest point in South Dakota. It’s also the highest summit in the United States, east of the Rocky Mountains.

The Black Hills has a multitude of caves; each one unique from the other. Navigate a tour through one of the world’s longest caves, and marvel at the ancient rock formations.

In the town of Lead lies the Homestake Mine. Until it closed in 2002, it was the biggest gold mine in North America. The mine is still open for tours.

If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed. From Sheridan Lake to Pactola Lake, you’ll find pristine waters, suitable for kayaking, canoeing, boating, and water skiing.

Take your pick when it comes to hunting and fishing in the Rushmore State. Deer, antelope, bear, mountain lion, elk, and bighorn sheep dot the Black Hills.

In addition, there are many species of birds present: pheasants, ducks, and geese, to name a few. Angling and fly fishing opportunities yield walleye, perch, northern pike, and rainbow trout.
