Check out this video to learn more about venomous snakes in Ohio.
Snakes are a creature that many people have misconceptions about. They are often feared for being dangerous and many people even kill snakes on sight because of this fear.
However, with a little education, it is possible to avoid these unnecessary fears and killings. This video from the WildOhio is a great place to start.
In the video, a biologist from Shawnee State Park talks about the different kinds of venomous snakes that live in Ohio, clears up the difference between venom and poison and explains how to know the difference between Ohio's venomous snakes and the harmless yet common black rat snake.
With only three species of venomous snakes living in the state, it is not all that likely that you will ever run into one while you are out hunting, fishing, or hiking in the Ohio woods. However, if you do come upon a snake, don't panic. The best course of action is to simply back away slowly and calmly.
Although snakes aren't everyone's favorite animal, there is no reason to fear them as much as some folks do. They are vital to the health of the ecosystem and do a great job of controlling rodent populations.
If you don't bother snakes, they will most certainly return the favor.
