Dutch oven meals are a must when you are out in the wilderness. A lot of people might think that dutch oven cooking is too difficult to master. That is not the case with this ultimate dutch oven breakfast. It is simple yet delicious so there is no excuse for you to give it a try.

10-12 Potatoes

2 lbs Bulk Breakfast Sausage (or make your own)

1 Medium White Onion

3 Cups Shredded Cheddar Cheese

12 Eggs

Cooking Oil

In a large dutch oven, pour enough cooking oil to coat the bottom. Heat the dutch oven over high heat. (If using a campfire, place the oven on several hot coals from the fire. If using charcoal, place twelve hot coals under the oven.)

Slice potatoes and place them in the hot oven cooking them to the desired consistency. Slice the onion and add to potatoes. Cook the onion until transparent, approximately five minutes. Add the sausage to the potatoes and cook until done and mixed well together. Spread the potato and sausage mixture evenly in the oven and sprinkle the cheese over the top of the mixture.

Place the lid on the dutch oven and remove from high heat. Remove half of the coals and return the dutch oven to those coals to continue cooking. Remove the lid and crack the eggs over the top of the melted cheese. Replace the lid and add four or five hot coals to the top of the lid. Keep covered until eggs are cooked through. Approximately 10 minutes for an over easy to over medium consistency.

This ultimate dutch oven breakfast will feed your entire party. You can make changes to the amount necessary according to your needs. If cooking for a small group, this recipe can also be made using a cast iron skillet.
