A man from Croydon in the United Kingdom was sentenced after poaching a deer, then boasting about it on Facebook to the Deer Stalkers International group.
Mian Zeshan Shahid stole a roe deer from a field, transported it home alive and then slit its throat, the Telegraph newspaper reported. When he posted on Facebook to a deer hunting group, saying the animal was big enough to feed 10 people, several group members forwarded his information to the local police.
A woman also reported seeing Shahid loading the deer into a vehicle. Shahid was given a seven month jail sentence, which was suspended for two years when he pleaded guilty. He was charged on two counts: killing a deer illegally, and subjecting the animal to unnecessary suffering.
The presiding Magistrate, Richard Goold threw the book at Shahid, saying: "You brought that animal home alive and you killed that animal in a way which was inhumane. We have given the maximum prison sentence available to this court. If more was available we would be considering more. This is a horrendous crime. Be under no illusion how close you came today to being taken away in custody."
