Check out this winter fly fishing tactic to get on more trout (it’s dead easy).
The diehards who don’t hang up their gear when the cold comes see winter as an optimal time to get out and experience nature with almost no fishing pressure from other anglers. Fishing in colder waters can also be quite challenging, as you see less active fish who are a little bit more spooky. This video provides a simple yet little-known winter fly fishing tactic to help get tight lines.
It’s such a simple tip, yet I never thought of it: just go down a size in tippet when fishing those tiny midge flies and nymphs. This will make for a finer and lighter presentation and reduce the chances of a trout spotting the tippet and line.
If you haven’t tried it yet, consider getting out in the colder weather and get your fly fishing gear working for a couple more months. For gear, line, tippet and clothing to get you going on winter angling, be sure to check out ORVIS.
