That Dog Will Hunt… and So Much More

It started somewhere on a field no doubt, spoken by a man with gray in his hair and a limit of birds in his vest.

While it was probably first spoken literally, it's evolved into slang and buried itself in country culture like a rooster pheasant in a tuft of switchgrass.

Nowadays when a man bites into a good burger he says, "That dog will hunt." Or, when a woman is test-driving a new Chevy, she looks at her husband and says, "That dog will hunt."

The meaning has evolved, but one thing has remained the same: that dog will. The will of a dog is the reason they have the ability to raise our blood pressure when they disobey, raise our cheeks into a grin when they make their first retrieve, and bring us to tears when they breathe their last breath. A dog's will is the reason we love them.

That dog will always be special

That dog will listen ... sometimes

That dog will point me in the right direction

That dog will hunt, and so much more
