Quicksand isn’t a myth. It’s really out there and there’s only one way to get out of it.
If you’re an adventure junkie, backpacker or just prepping for nature’s worst situations, then the thought of quicksand has probably crossed your mind a time or two before.
Even though constricting mix of earth can kill you within minutes, there is a way to survive being swallowed alive. Here’s how.
Well, it didn’t take long for that test to come to an end. Glad that it was only a test.
If you find yourself sinking in a pool of quicksand, it’s best to quickly ditch any heavy gear that might be attached to you, such as a backpack. As frightening as it might be to find yourself sinking, stay calm and assess the situation before making any next moves. If you’re in the wilderness with a partner, make sure that they have solid footing before attempting to pull you out.
If you’re alone, believe it or not, laying back in the quicksand will help to make your body more buoyant, ultimately helping to release you from the suction. Depending on the amount of time that you’ve been stuck, it’s not uncommon to break free from pools of quicksand after several hours.
Always remain alert when you’re in the wilderness and keep a buddy close by.
