A tragic ending to a story that seems to be more common.
The Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission confirmed (through a statement to the Suwannee Democrat) that a 5-year-old girl was killed by a leaping sturgeon that ended up in the family's boat in northern Florida.
The girl's mother and brother were also injured. The family is reportedly from the town of Trenton, Florida, approximately 30 miles south of the Suwannee River, where the incident occurred.
The sturgeon living in the Suwannee are known to grow up to eight feet in length and approach 200 pounds in weight. This is the first confirmed death from a sturgeon strike on the river.
Three other people have been hurt by sturgeon in Florida this year, and another broke her ankle after a dolphin leaped in her boat.
