Snowmobilers Harass Caribou Herds in Newfoundland

Snowmobilers could face fines if harassment of caribou continues.

Near Stephenville and Black Duck Siding, Newfoundland, wildlife officers are looking into the pestering of caribou from locals who say snowmobilers have been getting too close to the herds, running the herd off the trail and circling them with their snow vehicles.

Not only are such activities cruel to the wildlife but they could result in harm to the humans responsible. With snowy conditions it is already difficult for the caribou to weigh through and more difficult to run away from menaces.

Patrols in the area have been increased to ensure the safety of the animals.

While no one has yet to be charged, irresponsible snowmobilers could be looking at fines from $1,000-$5,000 for messing with the wildlife.
