When small game was on the mind of the American pioneers, no better firearm could be used than a smooth bore musket.
Since there was no rifling in these early muskets, either bird shot or a single projectile could be fired from them. Sometimes a mix of both were loaded like one round ball and several buckshot for maximum power.
