Find out more about the new Texas open carry law.
When Texans wake up on New Year’s Day, 2016, those who are licensed firearms owners will have the option to open carry a handgun in most places.
While private businesses and other areas can still opt to ban them, openly carried handguns will be allowed for the first time since shortly after the Civil War.
Texas is among the highest states in terms of concealed handgun license holders in 2014, with nearly 826,000 registered.
Businesses remain in a tight spot, running the risk of offending one group no matter their choices on allowing open carry or not.
The same regulations will apply under the new law, making Texas the 45th state to enact an open carry law. Only California, Florida, Illinois, New York and South Carolina still ban the practice.
