A 46-year-old Minnesota man died at a lodge after being punched in the face at a fishing opener.
David "Super Dave" Taute, 46, died at a Mille Lacs resort during a fishing opener weekend after getting punched in the face by a 44-year-old man.
Local sheriff's officials have gone on record saying Taute got into a confrontation with Brooklyn Center man David Stay at Nitti's Hunter's Point Resort. Following the confrontation, deputies arrived 1:06 a.m. on May 14 to find Taute unresponsive as he was loaded on the ambulance. He was airlifted to a local hospital and was later pronounced dead after being hit on the left side of his face. Stay was arrested a few hours later and booked for first-and second-degree manslaughter chargers.
Taute's fiancée, Cathie Kranz, commented on the incident to a local news station.
"Evidently, this guy just kind of came up and was acting crazy," said Kranz to Fox 9. "Somebody walked in to get help and my Dave knew who he was so he walked up to him, hands in his pockets, and said 'What's the problem?' and he just hauled off and hit him and that was it."
"You couldn't be mad at Dave. There's no way you could be mad at Dave," she said. "It's like a nightmare. It never should have happened. Because he never would have hurt anyone. He didn't deserve that."
In addition to his fiancée, Taute leaves behind a 19-year-old son.
Nobody deserves to die in a freak incident like this, let alone as a resort reserved for fishing. Let's hope the attacker is swiftly punished.
