The Kel-Tec KSG Shotgun: Everything You Wanted to Know

The newest shotgun offered by Kel-Tec is still one of the most popular for many different applications.

Bullpup rifles and shotguns are all the rage in gun culture right now. The shortness of the bullpup style platforms allow use of the long gun in a variety of different ways. For example, for home defense, a shorter gun allows movement through a house and clearing of rooms easier than with a full size long gun.

Bullpups are popular because they are not classified as a short barrel rifle (SBR) and therefore do not need a tax stamp from the BATFE. Some state laws also do not allow SBRs, so since a bullpup has a normal length barrel, just set back farther in the chassis, they are legal in those states.

Not wanting to miss out on an excellent opportunity, Kel-Tec released a bull pup shotgun call the KSG. This 12-gauge shotgun measures 26.1 inches in length with an 18.5-inch barrel. It has two, six or seven round tube magazines that can be switched with a selector switch behind the pistol grip like on a select fire rifle. If the user uses three-inch shotshells, it will hold six in each tube. If the user loads 2.75-inch shotshells, it will hold seven in each tube.

In addition to putting one in the chamber, that can give the user a grand total of 15 rounds of 12-gauge firepower. By setting the selector switch to the middle position, this blocks the feed from the magazines and allows the user to manually load a round in the loading port one at a time.

The KSG is a manually-operated pump-action shotgun and completely ambidextrous. It comes equipped with a Picatinny rail on top and along the bottom for mounting optics, lights, lasers, vertical grips and other accessories. Loading is done through an ejection/loading port under the stock of the shotgun. Even though in many pictures it is shown with backup flip-up sights, these are not offered standard and must be purchased separately.

Keeping in mind that while Kel-Tec designed the KSG as primarily a fighting or combat shotgun, it has found uses in other places. A few people have used the shotgun for hunting while others have used the shotgun in shooting sports like field clays and trap. Some even use it in 3-gun competitions due to is lightweight and high capacity magazine tubes.
