A basking shark paid a visit to Portrush Harbor in Northern Ireland, and some kids got a really close look at it!
According to the YouTuber who posted this video, a basking shark visited a harbor in Northern Ireland for about four hours back in August of 2011. During its visit, the docile shark, which feeds mainly on plankton, made an easy sweep through the shallows, followed by one paddle-boarder and some very excited children!
Here's how it looked:
Since an adult basking shark can reach upwards of 18-24 feet in length and approach 5,000 pounds, this is likely a juvenile. You can still get a great look at the sheer size of this one compared to the kids it cruises by.
This one was said to be around 14 feet long.
Here's hoping that this vulnerable species is making a comeback and shows itself again for another generation of future conservationists!
