Seeing those two elk fighting at close range like that must have been an incredible experience. Luckily for him, it all worked out and he managed to arrow a really nice elk in the process.
I've been thinking about what I would have done if I were in his shoes. I certainly understand that it's easy for me to sit here in my house and say this, but I'd like to think that I would have waited until the fight was over before shooting an elk. I say this because I think that by waiting, I could better appreciate the wonder and rarity of having the opportunity to witness (and feel) such an amazing event up close.
Having said that, I don't blame the hunter for taking the shot one bit. After all, a lot can go wrong while waiting for the fight to end: the wind could change, one of the elk might notice me, one elk might kill the other one, or a whole host of other things that could result in an unfilled tag.
However, I feel pretty confident that I could still live with myself if I ended up not shooting an elk because I waited for the fight to finish. After all, I'll always have another opportunity to shoot an elk, but I may never get another chance to see two elk go to town on each other a close range ever again.
What about you? If you encountered two fighting elk like these guys did, would you have shot one while they were duking it out? Leave your responses in the comments below.
