GoFundMe Campaign Pays Fines for Grand Canyon Litterbug

Outside Online

A Grand Canyon litterbug gets by with a little help from his friends.

A GoFundMe campaign was started by Marie Callaway Kellner to support her friend Nicolas Niemi help pay fines issued earlier this month.

Niemi, a 75-year-old Alaskan, was ordered to pay the nearly $2,500 in fines and court fees after he was found guilty of dumping food scraps into the Colorado river and illegally collecting firewood while guiding a rafting trip through the Grand Canyon.

The GoFundMe campaign was successful and raised the goal of $3,000 in less than a week.

Callaway Kellner says the page is "about recognizing what he's done not just for the Colorado, but for rivers all over the world."

Whether you believe Niemi's crimes were harmless or think he is a Grand Canyon litterbug, his fines are paid by the help of the campaign and Niemi is back on the right side of the law.
