You've got a giant black marlin weighing maybe over a thousand pounds on the line. What goes through your mind when all you pull aboard is...its massive head!?
The crew from New Zealand's "Fishing Show" are fishing giant black marlin off the coast of Australia.
And boy, giant is the right word to describe the fish in this video. The size, frenzied energy, and power of the fighting marlin is awesome to see, as it repeatedly explodes from the water.
During a fight with one particularly gargantuan black marlin, host Matt Watson puts his hands to his head and says, "Our worst fear might have happened. The sharks might have got it."
While we don't see the actual shark feeding frenzy, when the crew pull what's left off the giant marlin aboard, it's a little scary. It may be even more impressive because we don't see the attack, and our imaginations kick in to paint that scene.
All that's left of the behemoth marlin is its head, but the size of the head is jaw-dropping. Watson grabs hold of the marlin's billet and mentions that it is "thicker than a baseball bat."
"You'd consider something like this to be at the top of the food chain. An apex predator," he says. "To think that something like this, got eaten by another fish. It's incredible."
