Fly fishing for mako shark is on the bucket list for three guys from Utah. Lucky for them, the California coast off of San Diego is famous for finding these awesome apex predators.
Watch as they hook up with Captain Mark Martin from San Diego Salt Water Fly Fishing. Mark is a great guide. His setup maximizes the opportunity for “fish on.”
Key to the operation is establishing a chum slick to get the sharks in range of the fly. He also deploys an electronic pulsating device, called a mako magnet, to help draw these big fish in.
One of the guys has never cast a fly rod before, and Mark walks him through the process. After ten minutes, the guy is throwing that fly like a pro. And he hooks a nice mako!
These guys loved getting this one done. What’s on your bucket list?
