If your time on the range is becoming mundane, it's time to up your game with some of these 8 targets that will make your range time a blast.
Let's face it, sometimes you just get tired of going to the gun range and shooting paper targets. There's nothing wrong with that, it's good to mix things up sometimes. If you are ready to take your range shooting to the next level check out these 8 targets that are guaranteed to make your range time a blast.
Eggs are cheap, quite responsive, environmentally friendly. Grab some of the old eggs that have been sitting around in the kitchen a little too long and head out to the range. You can place the eggs at virtually any distance and with your favorite .22 have a grand time plinking without ever having to wonder if you hit the target or having to clean up when you are finished.
2. Remote Controlled Cars
There are a couple ways to look at this one. Of course you could just shoot the remote controlled cars, but that would end up being a quite expensive target if you are any good. The more recommended method would be to tie something like a balloon to the car and then practice hitting a moving target. You can even use a dowel and balloon so that you don't have to waste money on helium. The video shows practice where the balloon is coming towards a shooter but you could also practice the same thing with random/lateral movement.
3. Bowling Pins
If you can manage to get your hands on some bowling pins they make absolutely great reactive targets. Their shape makes them a perfect tool to put on a rod for a self-resetting swinging action.
4. Golf Balls
If your skills are just too great for bowling pins, or maybe you're looking to take your game to the next level, golf balls are a great place to look. The great thing about golf balls is that you have the option of just tossing them on the ground and trying to shoot them all the way across a field, or you can also hang them from a string and watch them spin as you hit your target.
Paintballs make a super-cheap reactive target. You can use a little glue and stick them on top of a log or stick or you can put them on the front of a target like the one in the video below. As soon as you hit the shot you'll see an explosion of color. These are great for friendly shooting competitions.
6. Fruits and Vegetables
Old fruits and vegetables that have managed to go bad before you get around to eating them can make for excellent targets for almost any caliber weapon. Just take the rotting targets downrange and then watch them practically disintegrate when impact occurs.
7. Balloons (Propane Optional)
Balloons are always a cheap and easy instant feedback target. You shoot them, they pop! Of course there are always ways to make the feedback a little more interesting; take this video below for example. The guys have taken it upon themselves to fill the balloons with propane before shooting as well as attach the balloons to a sparking device so that they have guaranteed ignition when the balloons pop.
8. Explosive Targets
Of course any list of fun targets can't be complete without explosives on it. Whether you choose to go with Tannerite, Binary Explosives, or any of the other wide range of explosive chemicals out there today, grab some powder, mix up a small batch, and let the bullets fly.
