An amateur photographer caught a unique sight on camera--a bird trying to swallow a crayfish whole.
But the crayfish didn't go without a fight. Thinh Bui captured the struggle as a female hooded merganser duck struggled to swallow the freshwater crustacean on a lake in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
First, the duck chased the crayfish.
Once the waterfowl reached the crustacean, the fight was on.
Eventually, the hooded merganser, which is the only merganser in North America, got the upper hand.
Finally, the duck swallowed its dinner whole.
Bui says the entire dinner episode, from chase to swallow, took about four minutes.
The female hooded merganser is noted for its cinnamon-colored crest. The male of the species has a black-and-white pattern.
Besides diving for crustaceans, hooded mergansers also eat frogs.
