Hunting season is upon us and to paraphrase the great Fred Bear, hunting is a soul-cleansing experience. Well, there is nothing like some great music to help you get in the right mindset for a soul-cleansing hunting trip. Fortunately, there are plenty of great hunting songs out there that will get you pumped for hunting season.
Here are our choices for the best hunting songs of all time. Without a doubt, if you make a playlist out of these hunting songs, you’ll be fired up, in the right frame of mind, and ready to hit the woods.
9. Granddaddy’s Gun – Rhett Atkins & Dallas Davidson
No list of the best hunting songs is complete without an acknowledgement of how hunting and family are intertwined. My grandfather is a big reason why I’m the hunter I am today and I’m sure there are many others who feel the same way about their grandfathers. This song is a nostalgic piece about a man reminiscing about an old shotgun that his grandfather gave him many years ago and the memories of his grandfather teaching him to hunt and shoot.
8. Backwoods Boy – Josh Turner
The opening lyrics of the song talk about waking up early, grabbing a .243, and driving out to a deer stand in search of a ten point buck with 11 inch tines. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a great hunting song to me!
7. Spirit Of The Wild – Ted Nugent
Not only is the “Spirit of the Wild” the name of Ted Nugent’s TV show on the Outdoor Channel, but it is also the name of one of his many songs about hunting. One of the appeals of hunting for many people is the ability to temporarily leave civilization and reconnect with our more primitive heritage. Acknowledging the call of the “Spirit of the Wild” is what beckons us to return to the woods time and time again and Uncle Ted does a good job of capturing that feeling in this great hunting song.
6. A Country Boy Can Survive – Hank Williams Jr.
Like Ted Nugent, Hank Williams Jr. is another famous musician who also happens to be a big time hunter. This is reflected in his songs and “A Country Boy Can Survive” does a good job of describing how hunting is more than a hobby for him: it’s a lifestyle. He’s got a shotgun, a rifle, and a four wheel drive. He can skin a buck and run a trot line. How many hunters do you know that can be described by those two sentences in this classic hunting song?
5. Shotgun Boogie – Tennessee Ernie Ford
Don’t worry, not all of the entries on this list of the best hunting songs of all time are about deer hunting. “The Shotgun Boogie” is an oldie but a goodie where he sings about hunting rabbits, squirrels, and doves with his shotgun, and even falls in love with a woman who shares his love of shotguns and hunting small game.
4. The Bird Hunters – Turnpike Troubadours
“The Bird Hunters” is a masterful ballad of a failed relationship with a woman told against the backdrop of a quail hunt. There are plenty of experiences and feelings that many hunters are familiar with in this song: working with a good pointing dog, a covey of quail taking flight, hunting on a cold morning, and missed shots at birds on the wing. Not only is this a great hunting song, but it is a true country music song that is well worth adding to your hunting playlist.
3. Openin’ Day – Rhett Atkins & Dallas Davidson
Like many hunters, I shot my first deer on a hunt with my dad beside me in the deer stand. For this reason, “Openin’ Day” strikes a chord with me because it tells the familiar story of a young man hunting with his father on the opening day of deer season and taking his first deer.
2. Da Turdy Point Buck – Bananas At Large
This is the first hunting song that I can ever remember hearing. When I was around 10 years old, my dad and I were driving to our deer hunting camp for the opening weekend of deer season when this song came over the radio. My life was changed forever. It’s a pretty ridiculous song, but no list of the best hunting songs is complete without “Da Turdy Point Buck.”
1. Fred Bear – Ted Nugent
Ted Nugent’s powerful ode to the father of modern bow hunting is a masterful piece and if it doesn’t get you pumped up for deer season, I’m not sure what will. How many thousands of hunters have dreamed of hunting with Fred Bear? This song has to be one of the best hunting songs of all time: I’m not even an archery hunter and I love it!
Here’s a full playlist of the songs, enjoy!
