There's obvious appeal, but should you get a Benelli 828U?
The new Benelli 828U over/under shotgun will change the way you think about Benelli. It may also change the way we think about shotguns in general.
Is the 828U a trend setter, or just a flash in the pan?
The Benelli 828UThe Benelli 828U in nickel engraved finish.
What's in the Box?
This first Benelli entry into the over and under shotgun market, or any market other than semi-automatic, is a 12 gauge with either 26" or 28" barrels chambered for either 2¾" or 3" shells.
Each gun comes in a custom standard hard case, five sets of Crio choke tubes, and an adjustable stock. It's available in a satin black or nickel engraved finish. Either model with either barrel configuration should come in at right around 6.5 pounds.
Who Needs It?
Do not let the $2,500 price tag and the sleek looks fool you into thinking this is a collector's piece or meant only for sporting clays.
- The "U" stands for Upland.
- The entire design process focused on hunters and hunting.
Although it totes a hefty price tag, the out-of-the-box customizable and technological features make the 828U something of a bargain.
Choke combinations allow this one gun to work for any shotgun-appropriate hunting situation, plus there is the ability to customize the stock yourself. Have you priced custom fitted shotguns lately? Finally, if you want a shotgun that you paid a lot of money for to look like a shotgun that you paid a lot of money for, the nickel engraved model can be yours for $3,000 MSRP.
There is no doubt that this shotgun will give you a step up on all but very high end shotguns. Whether those advantages justify the price is for you the shooter to decide. Its also the answer Benelli awaits with crossed fingers.
Why Do You Need It?
The combined standard features of this shotgun do legitimately set it apart from its competitors:
- Did we say customizable stock? Per Benelli there are 40 possible stock position combinations.
- The 828U is fitted with the Progressive Comfort® system to reduce recoil and barrel movement.
- Crio® treated barrels and choke tubes which increase the density of shot pattern.
- Carbon fiber rib with Fiber Optic site.
- Auto Safety.
- Steel locking system designed to reduce wear on the pins and extend the life of the gun.
Plainly the price tag on the Benelli 828U is the biggest consideration for most hunters. Besides that, Benelli has created what can truly be called a modern shotgun. Whether or not it becomes a hunting sensation remains to be seen but there is no doubt many hunters will flock to get their hands on the current "latest and greatest."
I would not be surprised to see other manufacturers following Benelli's lead with their next generation of shotguns. Expect more use of modern materials in construction, more self-customizable features, more versatility, and safer shotguns in the near future.
In my book, that spells a win for hunters and a hit for Benelli.
