AK-47: A Weapon of Peace? VICE Looks Into the Rebranding [VIDEO]

The AK-47 has received a bad reputation through the years as a weapon of terror, but gun manufacturers are working on changing that.

Engineered in 1947 by Mikhail Kalashnikov to be an all purpose weapon that can be used in any condition, the AK-47 has become one of the most well known and widely used rifles in the world. The Kalashnikov Arms Company produces thousands of AK-47’s for civilian and military use every year. There are currently about 1,000,000 in use today.

Unfortunately, the AK-47 is not often seen as the weapon of peace Kalashnikov designed it to be. Popular in Hollywood movies as the bad guy’s weapon of choice and media-filled images of terrorist spraying troops with fire, they have quickly become viewed as much more of an anti-peace weapon.

Gun manufacturers are now trying to change that image back to what they wanted it to be.

As of now, the AK-47 is still banned from being imported into the United States.

Maybe one day that will change as people realize that it is actually used for more good than bad. As we all know, a gun itself isn’t capable of killing a person, the person wielding the firearm makes that decision.
