This classic one-on-one game lets you challenge your friends to epic battles. The great thing about chess is that there are so many levels of play. Some know all the tricks and tactics and some may barely know which pieces are allowed to move where, but all can enjoy the game.
In checkers, the rules may be more simple, but the excitement is just as intense. With cunning blocks, killer combos, and the eventual “king” running around the board there will never be a dull moment.
A good deck of cards may be the most versatile game you can have in you cabin. From poker to rummy, and go fish to solitaire there are countless games that can be played. Just beware of any friend who asks if you want to play 52 pickup.
A nice set of dominoes will also be a handy addition to your game collection. It is best to get a larger set (at least double 12) in order to play larger games with more people, you can always scale down if needed.
Whether you’re playing classic one-on-one or a group game like chicken foot or train, dominoes are sure to provide hours of entertainment.
Six-sided dice are a handy piece of gaming equipment. There are many games that can be played with dice. Yahtzee and Farkle require just a few dice that can be passed around the table. Some games, like liars dice made famous by the Pirates of the Caribbean movie, require each player to have their own set.
Luckily, dice are relatively cheap and if you have a lot of board games you can always borrow theirs.
Jenga is a great way to pass the time. Games may last a while, or just a few seconds, but either way you’ll find yourself whooping and hollering as players try their best to keep the tower standing. You can play with a standard set, or with a little work you can build your own set of “Giant Jenga” and multiply the fun.
It’s hard to find someone who has never played Monopoly. The classic version can definitely bring back some childhood memories, or you can play a newer version themed after one of your favorite T.V. series or movie franchise.
Scrabble will test your wits and your luck as you hope to draw the letters needed to spell big words and score big points. You may want to have a dictionary on hand to call out words your friends have invented, and verify your own.
Cards Against Humanity
Cards Against Humanity may not be a classic yet, but it is a variant on the classic children’s game “Apples to Apples” albeit with a very adult twist.
It may not be for everyone, and especially isn’t for children, but if you are a fan of off-the-wall, dark humor this game is a must-have. Use the wild answers on your cards to fill in the blanks on the question cards and let the hilarity/insanity unfold.
