Ozzy the Weasel might be the most popular weasel on YouTube. His frantic and entertaining “war dance” is one reason for his fame.
YouTube channel Frisco68 has earned significant viewership with a series of fun and energetic videos featuring a semi-tame weasel named Ozzy. This video records Ozzy engaged in what Frisco68 refers to as Ozzy’s war dance, “a colloquial term for a behavior of excited ferrets and weasels.”
It’s one of the cuter, funnier, seemingly playful behaviors that several wild animals engage in. Watch Ozzy go giddily berserk over the fluffy tail in the middle of a bed.
Frisco68 continues with an explanation of this hilarious behavior:
“In wild animals, it is speculated that this dance is used to confuse or disorient prey. In domestic animals, the war dance usually follows play or the successful capture of a toy or a stolen object and is commonly held to mean that the weasel is thoroughly enjoying itself.”
Truth be told, I once had a “pet” gray squirrel that would exhibit much the same hyperactive, playful behavior. My wife would scratch at the seat of our couch and “Rocky” (yup, that was his name) would react just like Ozzy here: jumping and twisting, running behind the top of the couch, appearing again, jumping out to “attack” her hand by grabbing it, letting her go to scurry to the rear of the couch again, only to repeat this manic play over and over again.
It was a riot.
Frisco68 also notes in some of his other videos of Ozzy: “Disclaimer: A weasel is not a pet. They hate being locked up, they’re not friendly when hungry. Don’t get one. Seriously. Ozzy is a special case rescue baby. Cute, but deadly.”
That’s good advice. But please do check out the Frisco68 youtube channel. He’s got a lot of equally fun videos of Ozzy there to enjoy, including several where the little guy attacks and plays with his keeper’s hand, as shown in the featured image above.
