Wolves Surround a Wounded Elk When Her Companion Does the Unthinkable [VIDEO]

This wounded elk thought her luck had run out.

While filming wolves in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, biologist Isaac Babcock captured this footage of a wounded female elk being chased by wolves to the top of a ridge. The wolves had the wounded elk surrounded – but something remarkable happened.

Out of nowhere, another female appeared on the ridge and put herself between the wolves and the wounded elk. Babcock was amazed at what he was witnessing.

Watch what we he captured on camera.

“All of my textbook biology fails me,” Babcock narrates in the video. “When it’s survival of the fittest, where’s there room for this compassion?”

This clip is an excerpt from the PBS Nature documentary “River of No Return”. We haven’t seen the film, but one YouTube user commented that the next scene shows the wounded elk walking away with her friend in daylight.

That’s the kind of friend you want to have – one that will stand up against the wolves for you.
