Wood Duck Chicks Make Incredible 3-Story Leap of Faith

Nine wood duck chicks throw caution to the wind and leap from three-stories up. Will they all make it safely to the ground?

Randy Pentel, who lives in Mendota Heights, Minnesota, has a family of wood duck that return to his manmade box year after year. One of a few species of waterfowl that nest in cavities, wood duck don’t seem too weary when it comes to heights. Which in this case is good, as this nest is three-stories up.

Pentel shot this video on June 22, and as you’ll see, after a bit of coaxing from Mom – all of the chicks eventually followed her lead and jumped. Lucky for them, a soft blue tarp nicely cushions their fall.

You have to admit – that was pretty cute and humorous all rolled up in one.

Wood duck chicks are pretty fearless. But without that blue tarp, I think their landings would be a tad on the rough side!
