Unlike most waterfowl, wood ducks are right at home in trees and a well-built wood duck box will give them a great start in life.
When mother calls you better come running, or in the case of newly hatched wood duck chicks, jumping!
Here’s one of the cutest, most natural moments in nature that will make you smile and squirm at the same time. This one will leave you wondering just how many chicks one wood duck box can hold.
I’m just wondering how that hen got herself in through the opening with all those eggs inside of her!
Thanks to the Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center for posting another terrific video of this year’s future wood duck migration. The center says, “Wood ducks are known to nest up to a mile away from water, with potentially more success the further the nest is from water.”
Was it just me or did anyone else see a hawk swoop through the picture with 1:20 left in the video?? It was a little hard to tell because it happened so fast, but raptors like other birds of prey are opportunists.
In any event it’s official- wood duck hatchlings are the softest, bounciest waterfowl out there!
