According to Tyler McLaughlin, safety on the water is first and foremost.
The captain of the Pinwheel on National Geographic’s “Wicked Tuna” explains what he would do if a passenger went overboard while out fishing.
Listen and learn!
The first thing to do is create a waypoint on your GPS device to mark where your passenger went overboard. This will help you track back to that exact spot.
The next most important thing to do is calmly assess the situation. You need to understand how the person will drift and travel in the amount of time it takes you to get back to him or her.
To do this, take into consideration the wind direction and speed, as well as the tide direction. These two things will decide weather your target stays in the same spot or will drift in another direction.
Follow the rest of McLaughlin’s tips to minimize the time it takes to rescue someone who falls overboard.
