Going Dall Sheep Hunting? Here’s What You Need in Your Pack

Dall sheep hunting often requires hunters to pack their gear long distances. However, skimping on something could cost your life.

Here’s what KUIU founder and experienced backcountry hunter Jason Hairston packs in his dall sheep hunting pack for a ten day hunt.

As you can see from the video, Hairston’s dall sheep hunting kit is pretty light considering the amount of time that he will be in the field. Aside from a spare pair of undies and food, duplicate items are almost non-existent.

You can tell Hairston has been on an extended backpack hunt before by the way he layers his food and gear in his pack. First, he places some light but bulky items near the bottom of the pack. This will help keep his heavier gear from weighing him down.

Next, he keeps the heaviest items close to his back. Finally, he keeps items that require quick access like rain gear and head lamps in outside pockets so they can be had in a moment’s notice.

Use Hairston’s tips to help you decide what to take and what to leave behind on a guided backpack hunt and rest assured that you’ll have what you need without toting a bunch of extra weight.
