A freezer full of venison is great, but sometimes there’s more than you know what to do with.
When thinking about deer, most hunters will instinctively think about hunting it; where to find the right deer lease, what equipment will be needed, how much practice and preparation will go into the perfect hunt. Of course, shooting a deer is only half the job. The real question is what to do once you have one.
Chicken fried venison

When in doubt, the easiest thing to do with your venison is to chicken fry it. It’s just as easy with this meat as with chicken or beef. All you need is egg, flour, oil, salt, and pepper. Just thaw the meat, dip it in the egg, coat with flour, repeat, then fry.
Though easily accomplished with a deep fryer, it’s possible to fry them in a regular pot or even a frying pan, provided you’re attentive. While you’re at it, prepare some fries to eat along with it.

Perhaps the most popular way to use up venison, a hearty stew is the perfect way to warm you up after a long day in the stand. There are as many variations of this recipe as there are hunters who enjoy it. Whether you like it with as many vegetables as the pot will hold or like a dash of spicy pepper, there is no way to go wrong.
While this recipe is most easily accomplished with a crock pot, it is possible to cook it in a large pot over the stove or even a campfire.

One of the best qualities venison is its ability to become delicious jerky you can take with you anywhere. Though a little tedious, it is entirely possible to make jerky on your own.
Perhaps the easiest way to make jerky is to use a dehydrator. If you don’t have one, there are ways to make it using a conventional oven. Barring even that, jerky can be prepared in a microwave, though this method will probably require the most direct attention.

Be sure to research these various methods and select the one that best suits you. Just be sure to devote ample time to preparation. Cut the meat with the grain to allow for greater ease when eating, marinade thoroughly with whatever flavors you like, and package the finished jerky in an air tight container. It should last 2-3 months, so don’t make more than you can eat.

Whether you like it spicy or sweet, chili is an excellent way to use up some of that excess venison. Particularly delicious in the cooler weather, just make sure you give it ample time to cook before serving. Feel free to taste test, too!

Simply grind the venison, mix it with whatever spices or other flavors you prefer, roll it in foil, refrigerate for 24 hours, then bake in the oven for 1 ½ hours.
