There’s a new record for West Virginia rainbow trout.
Eric Files Sr. of Martinsburg, West Virginia was fishing for sunfish with a nightcrawler when he hooked into this giant rainbow trout in a private pond in Berkeley County on April 30, 2014, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.
The 33.11-inch, 19.40-pound fish beat out the previous state records for length and weight.
Ironically, the last weight record for rainbow trout was a 17.31-pound fish caught by Tony Corbin from the same private pond in 2013.
Rainbow trout are a commonly stocked species, and when they are secluded to private ponds, they’re no longer subjected to heavy angling. That, amongst other factors, help contribute to such massive sizes.
