Hunter Makes 603-Yard Shot on a New Mexico Elk Hunt with a 6.5 Creedmoor

Gun writer Wayne van Zwoll shows us just what the little 6.5 Creedmoor is capable of with his 600-yard shot on a really nice bull elk in New Mexico.

In this video, Wayne van Zwoll demonstrates the impressive performance of the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge on his northern New Mexico elk hunt.

At the time of this particular hunt, the 6.5 Creedmoor was a brand new cartridge and Wayne was probably among the first people to take an elk with it.

Don't be fooled by the small bullet or the light recoil of the rifle though. That little cartridge delivers impressive performance really puts that elk down.

Watch the video to see for yourself:

Don't let anybody tell you that you have to use one of the big magnums for hunting elk. Hunters have been taking really big animals like elk and moose with cartridges like the 6.5x55mm Swedish, .270 Winchester, the 7mm Mauser, the 7mm-08, and .308 Winchester for years.

Heck, Randy Newberg has probably taken more elk with the .308 Winchester than he has with any other cartridge.

So, as long as you place your shots properly and use some good quality 6.5 Creedmoor ammo, the elk will probably never know what hit it.

That said, Wayne really knows how to shoot. His rifle was perfectly sighted in and he's an extremely experienced hunter and marksman. Just because he pulled off a 600+ yard shot on an elk with a 6.5 Creedmoor doesn't mean that you should.

There's nothing magic about the 6.5 Creedmoor and, to tell you the truth, most hunters have no business taking a shot at that range with the cartridge, especially on an elk. However, this does go to show what the cartridge is capable of under the right circumstances.
