The new Virginia bear record is likely to have been set by Tyler Napier, of Charlotte County.

Napier shot and killed this 728-pound black bear while hunting on his parents’ farm in Keysville. It was 7′ 2″ tall and required the use of five men and a tractor to retrieve.

It took five shots to down the black bear, and with the last one, Napier said the beast rolled over and roared at him. “And that’s when I was nervous, because I was out of bullets of course,” Napier told WSET.

The previous Virginia bear record had scored  31 9/16 and was taken in 2010. Official scoring on Napier’s specimen will determine whether or not he holds the new state record.
