Any idea what's hidden beneath the papery sheaf of this wasp nest?

If you've spent any time in the outdoors, chances are you've stumbled upon a wasp nest at some point. And, if you're like me, you've often wondered what's hidden beneath that meticulously created paper exterior.

I decided it was time to find out.

In my office, I have a small collection of wasp nests I've collected over the years that are all of the bald-faced hornet variety. Yesterday, I opened one up.

Were you expecting that? Pretty neat stuff, right?

The ingenuity of nature never ceases to amaze.
