Park rangers believe they killed the black bear that attacked a teen camper in Smoky Mountain National Park last week.

Tuesday morning, park rangers captured and euthanized what they believe to be the same black bear that attacked a young camper last weekend at Smoky Mountain National Park in North Carolina.

Gabriel Alexander was the 16-year-old teen who was attacked June 6, 2015 by a black bear at his family’s campsite in the park. The bear pulled him from his hammock while he slept at around 10:30 p.m.

His father quickly woke up and drove the bear away, but Gabriel still suffered multiple injuries, including lacerations to the head. He was flown to a nearby hospital and listed in stable condition.

Rangers quickly closed down four trails and six campsites while they monitored the area for the bear after the attack. The trails will remain closed until a DNA sample taken from the bear can be matched to hair samples taken from the site of the attack.
