Trout Spey in Montana is the Overlooked Season

The state of Montana is undoubtedly one of the best trout regions in the world.

People come from all over to fish those waters every spring, summer, and the epic fall. However, winter time is often overlooked by many due to the colder weather conditions, high flows, and blustery wind. It’s in times like these that trout spey can shine.

In Redington’s newest installment of the “Find Your Water” series, trout spey is on full display. Not only do these guys catch fish, they catch a lot of them, and good sizes, too!

I’ve only ever cast a one-handed fly rod. These two-hand rods seem like something only steelhead fishermen get down on somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. However, after watching all this, perhaps it’s time to reconsider.

Smaller trout spey rods have been becoming more popular, as the fly fishing resurgence is only getting stronger. Just like tenkara once was, it looks like this style of spey fishing for fish other than salmon is more than just a fad. Trust us, that’s a good thing.
