A traditional Slovakian Christmas dinner consists of breaded and fried carp, that once lived in your bathtub.
Do you want to be really different this year? Did you find out you may have some distant Eastern European heritage? Well know that in that part of the world, a traditional Christmas dinner is breaded fried carp. After it lives in your bathtub for a few days, of course. Pair that with some vinegar potato salad and you will be transported to Prague on Christmas day.
Here are some recipes for a traditional Slovakian Christmas dinner.
Breaded Fried Carp
1 cup flour
2 cups bread crumbs
spices (cayenne, salt, pepper)
Breading fish is not hard to do. Simply prepare a plate with some flour, a bowl with two eggs (depending on how many people you are cooking for), and a plate of breadcrumbs. You can put spices in the breadcrumbs for added flavor. I usually put in a dash of cayenne pepper, some salt and some black pepper. Cut the fish into fillets and dip into the flour, then the egg wash, and then in the breadcrumbs. Repeat with all the fish fillets.
Heat up some oil in a pan until it is hot and fry the fish fillets. Make sure you turn the heat down so that you can cook the fish longer without burning the breadcrumbs.
Serve with lemon slices, shaved almonds and prunes.
3 potatoes (peeled and diced)
4 carrots (peeled and diced)
2 celery (cleaned and diced)
1 parsley root (peeled and diced)
1 cup gherkins (diced)
1 onion (peeled and diced)
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup vinegar
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
1/4 cup natural yogurt
1/4 cup lemon juice
Boil potatoes, carrot, celery and parsley root until tender. Drain liquid, add gherkins and onions. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. When complete, refrigerate before serving.
Some people love carp, others hate it but it is one tradition that stays with Eastern Europe.
You also mustn’t leave the table during the meal or someone in your family will die before next Christmas.
