Spring and summer are the seasons when the outdoorsman’s enemy arrives: the mosquito. With these tips you can enjoy the outdoors even in the time of blood-sucking miniature vampires.
Avoid insect bites and the chance for illness and aggravation. Enjoy the summer at peace with a little preparation.
1. Dress accordingly.
Your clothing is the first line of defense against insect attack. Long sleeves, long pants and higher boots may not be fashionable in the heat but when your friends, clad in only tank tops and shorts, leave early due to blood loss from insects, then you can enjoy the wilds in solitude.
Do not forget a hat and maybe a bandanna for your neck.
2. Netting is your friend.
A head net tucked in your pocket may save the day against all winged intruders and your cranium. Use your head and protect it. Whole mesh armor outfits are also available.
Check out the Shannon Bug Tamer. I have used their jackets and pants for years.
3. This leaves us with repellents.
Treat your clothing with a product like Sawyer’s Premium Insect Repellent Clothing Spray. It has permethrin that will not only repel ticks, chiggers, and mosquitoes but will kill them too.
For applying to the skin, pick a product like Avon’s Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Expedition Insect Repellent. Also Deet and Picardin insect repellents are very good to use.
Colors have had some scientific correlation to insect bites and also the individual person’s chemical make-up. Light-colored clothing may not be a viable option while hunting or bird watching. If you use the above tips you will do just fine.
Get out there and enjoy the wilds, bug-free!
