Country music star Tim McGraw to headline at gun control benefit concert.
Tim McGraw has announced that on Friday, July 17, he will be holding a concert at the XFINITY Theater in Hartford, Connecticut. All of the net proceeds from this event will go towards funding the gun prohibitionist group known as Sandy Hook Promise.
In a recent statement to the press, McGraw expresses his belief that the tragedy was a way to take a horrible loss and transform it into a cause to help end gun violence.
“Out of this tragedy a group was formed that made a promise to honor the lives lost and turn it into a moment of transformation,” said Mr McGraw. “Sandy Hook Promise teaches that we can do something to protect our children from gun violence. I want to be a part of that promise — as a father and as a friend.”
Although McGraw may believe that his efforts to support a gun control organization should be applauded, his fan base views it as a betrayal to both them and their 2nd amendment rights. This should come as no surprise to McGraw because country music is associated with conservative viewpoints and traditional values, neither of which include gun control.
Warner Todd Huston, writer with Right Wing News, has stated that this stunt only adds to the already existing list of why people should stop listening to Tim McGraw altogether.
AWR Hawkins, writer with Breitbart.com, wants to remind people that there was already gun control policies in place during the shooting and that these efforts will only effect law abiding citizens.
“It should be noted that there was 100 percent gun control at Sandy Hook Elementary on December 14, 2012. No guns were allowed, period. You can’t have more gun than that. Moreover, there were laws against stealing guns and possessing stolen guns as well. But none of these laws stopped or even dissuaded Adam Lanza. Gun control renders law-abiding citizens defenseless, but it does nothing to stop criminals from carrying out their treachery. Because of this, the money McGraw and Currington raise will ultimately succeed in making it harder for law-abiding citizens to acquire and carry the guns they need for self-defense.”
Even angry Twitter followers have joined in by tweeting “Shut Up & Sing” and voting him the “Douche bag of the day.”
Billy Currington and Chase Bryant are also scheduled to perform during McGraw’s Concert for Sandy Hook Promise. Tickets will begin to go on sale this Friday.
