Vance Montgomery of Vanmar Taxidermy has outdone himself with this mount, and he plans to go even bigger next year.
- 3 blue gill
- 5 gizzard shad
- 5 crappie
- 1 nine-and-a-half-pound large-mouth bass (under the water)
- 1 ten-pound largemouth coming though the water jumping after a big bullfrog.
The best part about it is that this piece of taxidermy is all replicas.
He won first place in 1990 and second in 1991 at the world taxidermy championship in fish taxidermy and is a four-time first place in winner in his home state of Oklahoma, besides placing first in Arkansas and Missouri competitions.
Beyond just fish, he won best of show in Oklahoma in whitetail taxidermy and best of show in life-size taxidermy in the Oklahoma State taxidermy competition.
Montgomery has lived in the Tulsa, Oklahoma, area his entire life. His taxidermy studio is located just outside of Tulsa in Catoosa, Oklahoma. Adjacent to the studio is a Vanmar Outdoors retail tackle and hunting store.
Continuing his family tradition, Vance and his son Marcus co-own Montgomery Productions, a trade show company that has been hosting events for nearly 20 years, including the Oklahoma Tackle Hunting and Boat Show in Oklahoma City (January 27th to 29th) and the MidSouth Tackle, Hunting, and Boating show at Grand Lake in Grove, Oklahoma (February 17th to 19th).
“I love creating special pieces like this one,” says Montgomery. “I haven’t competed in taxidermy in several years, but plan on doing a very special piece in 2017 that I hope to go win with at the highest level. Masters of masters division at the world show. It will be a awesome Challenge to win, but I know I am doing the best work of my career. It’s time to make it happen. I love what I do so much, it’s fun getting to make a living at something you love.”
