The Russians Fished a Tank out of the Sea

It’s not every day that you going fishing and pull up a tank.

It also helps if you know where to look. The Russians did when they pulled up an M4 Sherman medium tank not far from the country’s Kola peninsula.

It doesn’t seem possible for a Sherman tank to be in the waters over there, but, it was supposed to be there. Well, not in the water, in Russia. During World War II, the United States sent military aid to the Soviet Union in the form of tanks and armored vehicles.

Most of the vehicles made it to land, but those aboard the Liberty Ship SS Thomas Donaldson didn’t make it. A German U-boat sank the Donaldson in March 1945.

The Russians called the tanks Emchas, and they raised one in 2014—an M4A2 Sherman.

The tank is said to be in good shape despite the saltwater. That’s because it’s reported that the goods America sent to the Soviets were packed and secured well for transport.
