Cascadia kayak angler Tyler Hicks explores the Omak Lake Lahontan cutthroat trout fishery.
Cascadia kayak angler Tyler Hicks has produced some of the best fishing footage I’ve seen online, and this particular video very well might be his next masterpiece. Spilt Milt Productions was at the top of my list of a dozen must-see youtube fishing channels last year.
If you want to be entertained and educated on some of the Northwest’s finest fisheries, you’ve got to subscribe to his YouTube channel.
In this short film, Hicks is fishing from his kayak at Omak Lake in north central Washington. It’s an alkaline lake that produces a trophy Lahontan cutthroat trout fishery and is managed by the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. Many of the fish are in excess of 20 inches and their aggressive nature combined with low fishing pressure makes for an extremely productive fishery, and they can be targeted using a number of different tactics.
While fly gear may be a more traditional approach, Hicks thinks outside the box and targets fish with a Brad’s Mini Cut plug trolled behind a small herring dodger, very similar rigging to what would normally be used for targeting salmon when trolling in tidal water. The new Yakima Bait Company MagLip 2.5 was another favorite, that was one of the show-stoppers at the Portland, Oregon Sportsmen’s show earlier this year.
Tyler Hicks creates some amazing underwater footage to show how fish follow and take the bait. The narration is frequently interrupted by hooking fish, making this one of the most action packed fishing short films you’ll see, and it’ll have you marking Omak Lake on your map, as well as your to-do list.
Beyond producing high quality fish porn, Hicks offers classes and guide services. If you want to explore more of the Pacific Northwest fisheries that Tyler Hicks frequents, you can contact him directly through his School of Fish Guide Service website, or through his School of Fish Facebook Page.
