A Tennessee hunting accident involving a police chief has affected two families in the early spring season.

The incident occurred during a turkey hunting trip Thursday in Richard City, TN, near the Alabama border, as reported by WRCBTV.com.

Local authorities said Stanley Whitman died Friday from brain damage suffered after being hit by a gunshot from Monteagle Police Chief Virgil McNeese.

The Marion County District Attorney has yet to say if McNeese will face any charges. The area in which the men had been hunting is locally known as a hotspot for wild turkeys.

McNeese has been with the Monteagle Police Department for nearly 20 years, serving as chief for the last eight.

With spring turkey hunting season upon us, plenty of hunters will be moving into the woods, hoping to stealthily move through the field and find some gobblers worth shooting at.
