Oh, the Texas Hill Country, how I love thee. Let me count the ways…
The Texas Hill Country is by far some of the prettiest country you will ever gaze upon.
Being a native Texan myself, it makes me feel like Gabby Johnson in Blazing Saddles. Remember the Authentic Frontier Gibberish Scene?
“Hell, I was born here… I was raised here… and dad-gummit, I’m gonna die here!!”
Alright, now that everyone knows just how much Texans love Texas, let’s get started.
Ten reasons why we should hunt in the Hill Country:
1. There is a plethora of deer…
2. Gruene Hall
After you get done quartering up your kill, you can head down to Gruene Hall and catch some live music.
Maybe have a beer, tell some pretty lady how good of a shot you made, and then ask her for a dance… (just don’t forget to wash the deer blood off your hands before you head into town).
It’s only the oldest and most historic dance hall in Texas.
Who knows, you might even run into somebody famous…
3. If you haven’t seen a Texas ten point walk out in the setting sun… then you haven’t lived
4. The Salt-Lick
How about a mid-day snack? Hunt hard all morning and then run over to the Salt-Lick in Driftwood for some tasty BBQ.
Just try not to fall asleep when you get back to your hunting spot, because you will be full my friend… you will be full.
5. Did I mention the thing about the Texas ten point?
More from Wide Open Spaces:
6. Heaven, is that you?
7. Two buck tags
An abundance of deer in the Texas Hill Country allows hunters to harvest two bucks per year.
Which is nice because if you’ve ever hunted in a one buck county before, you probably know the one buck county blues. Can’t shoot the spike because it’s your only tag, or that’s a management eight point I wish we could cull, but then I won’t have any more tags if a monster walks out…
Also, if you’re like some hunters I know, it’s always nice to have a back-up tag in case you need a mulligan.
8. The Horny Toad Bar and Grill in Cranfills Gap, TX (The Gap)
This is that little dive that we all wish was around the corner form our house. Everyone is welcome, everyone is friendly, and everyone is happy.
No need to change out of your camo.
When they ask you if you want the jalapeno cheese bread on your burger, say yes.
9. Catch a sunset you will never forget at Enchanted Rock, near Fredericksburg, TX
10. Luckenbach, TX
So, obviously I’m biased because I’m a Texan, but it’s hard not to brag when we can hunt in the Hill Country and those ten reasons just make reiterate my love for this place.
Come on by!
