The 1891 Mosin-Nagant Rifle is a rifle known and loved by many here in the United States from the cheap surplus market. It’s father is even more of an interesting rifle with quite a history as explained in this video.

American General Hiram Berdan came up with a bolt action design that the Russian Empire liked quite a bit. This large .42 caliber 1870 Russian Berdan Rifle was the trendsetter for the Russian military. This design worked very well and was eventually worked into a new rifle, the 1891 Mosin-Nagant Rifle.

It is truly the father of the Mosin-Nagant Rifles many of us enjoy at the gun range.
