Swimmers at UK Beach Hustle out of Shark’s Way

The swimmers on a beach in the United Kingdom probably looked like they were straight out of the movie Jaws.

On May 29, an 18-foot shark paid a visit to holiday makers at Lantic Bay, in Cornwall—and caused a little panic.

An 18-foot shark would put most swimmers on edge, but the folks on vacation had nothing to fear. Turns out the shark in question was a basking shark. It’s known as a gentle giant—not for attacking swimmers.

“There were a few people swimming who got out pretty quickly but a few brave souls stayed around to have a look,” says Tom George, who filmed the shark from his 18-foot boat.

Basking sharks are the second biggest fish in the world (reaching 20 to 26 feet), after the whale shark.
