When Daron Case paddled out at Silver Strand State Beach, he expected to catch some waves, not a whale.
A 20-foot gray whale decided to swim through the surf lineup almost directly under Case and his board.
Fortunately, Case had his GoPro on hand to capture this amazing encounter that took place at Silver Strand State Beach in Coronado, California.
Only two populations of gray whales are known to exist in the Pacific Ocean. The population that travels between the waters off Alaska and Baja California Sur ranges between 20,000 and 22,000 whales.
Even though the number seems large, the gray whale is endangered, and a close encounter like the one in the video is rare and precious.
